Since NATO has taken over the mission in Libya, there have been raised concerns about its capabilities. The same day the US was scheduled to pull back from Libya, NATO requested a 48hr extension for the US to continue, raising deep concerns regarding NATO's reliance on the US.
The Chief of Staff of the NTC's opposition forces stated: "Sadly, NATO has let us down... If NATO wanted to destroy the siege around Misratah, then it could have done so days ago. They use “killing civilians” as an excuse, “we do not want to perform air strikes for fear of killing civilians”. The area that Gaddafi forces are stationed in does not have any civilians, and civilians are dying each day under the siege."
Meanwhile Gaddafi's forces have advanced in several key areas, including Zintan, Yifren and Kikkla. NATO claims their reduction in air strikes has been due to weather concerns. However, no measures have been taken in areas unaffected by weather. The cities of Misrata, Zintan, Yifren, Adjdabiya, and Kikkla are in desperate need of assistance. Shortage of medical supplies, food and water are signaling a humanitarian crisis of great proportions.
We demand NATO implements the UN resolution 1973 protecting the civilians from Gaddafi's brutal forces to its fullest! We cannot allow their inaction to prolong the suffering of the Libyan people.
NATO please do your job and start saving civilians
Dear Secretary General Rasmussen,
We have had deep concerns over the past days with NATO’s role in Libya. It is evident that the situation in the country has gotten worse since NATO took command of the mission in Libya.
NATO’s forces have had little or no effect in most areas in Libya. This has led to Gaddafi’s forces attacking cities such as Misrata, Zintan, Yefren and other areas. Many innocent civilians have been killed including women and children. Gaddafi forces have attacked mosques, hospitals, and homes. The mass kidnapping and rape casualties by Gaddafi’s thugs, have horrified the people as they are trapped in their homes fearing for their lives. Further more, there is no electricity nor running water in both Misrata and Zintan. Shortage of medical supplies, food and water are signaling a humanitarian crisis. There has also been attacks on oil fields in the south by Gaddafi, and this is crucial as the libyan economy is dependent on oil revenues. Therefore, the longer this continues the greater the humanitarian crisis in Libya will be.
We demand NATO to take more action in upholding the UN Security Council resolution 1973, protecting the civilians and putting an end to the barbaric attacks of Gaddafi’s forces. We ask for more effort in acting on information from the Generals of the opposition, as they have been complaining of delays on NATO’s behalf.
We only ask that you fulfil the resolution, which is the basis of your role in Libya. We thank you for your participation in Libya, and hope NATO will take these accounts to effect.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
