The fight's heating up to save your red snapper

Red snapper in the U.S. South Atlantic are at critically low population levels - just 3 percent of 1945 amounts.

In March, many of you helped persuade regional fishery managers to temporarily halt all red snapper fishing for up to a year while a long-term recovery plan is considered. Now federal officials must give the final nod to the temporary moratorium. We are facing a tough challenge because some fishing interests are pushing to scuttle this recovery effort.

If we don't act now, red snapper could face commercial extinction, meaning it won't be worth fishing for. Scientists have a long-term recovery plan that could rebuild the population and produce higher red snapper catches than any on record - if given the chance to work. The plan starts with this needed six-to-twelve month fishing moratorium.

Although the price of smart, science-based decisions now may mean short-term economic losses for some fishing interests, the long-term cost of collapsed fisheries will be a far greater loss for everyone.

Please show your support for red snapper by sending a comment to Commerce Secretary Locke.

You are about to make a critical decision about red snapper in the U.S. South Atlantic, and I am writing to encourage you to help this iconic species recover from decades of chronic overfishing.

Please approve the interim rule that will temporarily halt red snapper fishing for six months with an optional six-month extension. This rule is desperately needed to help boost a population that has plummeted to critically low levels.

I support this temporary moratorium as a first step toward a long-term, scientifically based recovery plan that could restore a healthy red snapper population for us and future generations.

The citizens of the Southeast deserve a healthy ocean ecosystem and bountiful fish that provide food, recreation and jobs. I hope you will take strong steps to conserve this valuable resource.
