Stop profiting from insider information! Pass the STOCK Act! (H.R. 1148)
The Issue
The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act will make it illegal for anyone, including Congress Members, to buy or sell stocks, securities or commodities based on nonpublic information obtained from a member or employee of Congress. Engaging in "insider trading", or buying and selling stocks based upon information not available to the general public, is illegal for all investors and business executives. Punishments range from years in jail to massive fines. However, the same laws do not apply to members of Congress or their staffs. The STOCK Act will make it illegal for a member or employee of Congress to share nonpublic information if they know that it will be used to conduct trades. A majority of the House now supports the STOCK Act, however it's process has been stalled yet again. The time has come for Congress to pass the STOCK Act, and to start playing by the same rules as the rest of America.
