Take a look at the Gulf of Mexico. A spill at a British Petroleum oil rig has caused an unending nightmare for the residents of Gulf Coast states. Tar balls wash up on beaches, and have done so as recently as during hurricane Isaac in August. BP did a poor job of cleaning up this oil, instead deciding to spray Corexit on the floating oil to make it sink and appear to be cleaned up. People are sick and dying, and for what reason? To help us drill up fossil fuels, a totally unnecessary and antiquated form of energy production, that will not last for very long and can cause catastrophic problems to the environment. BP could not clean up their mess and have stopped even trying to do so. Shell cannot do so either. Alaska has some of the most pristine land in the world, and a similar spill to BP's in Alaska would be devastating to the environment. Are we really going to risk destroying one of the last beautiful, pristine places on the planet for a tiny amount of oil? The rest of the world has moved on to solar, wind, geothermal, and many other types of renewable energy. This is nothing more than a way for Shell to increase profits with wanton abandon and reckless disregard for the environment. We need to end this NOW, before it becomes established.
