Posthumously award Father Thomas M. Conway the Navy Cross Medal

The Issue

I petition the United States Department of the Navy to posthumously award Father Thomas Michael Conway, chaplain on the USS Indianapolis, the Navy Cross for his heroism in combat during World War II, encouraging and reassuring young crewmen when the vessel was under attack by enemy warplanes and also for the bravery he demonstrated after the ship was torpedoed and sunk, comforting his fellow shipwrecked sailors for three days around-the-clock, forgoing sleep and rest to be of service to them, until his tragic and untimely death from dehydration and exhaustion one day before the survivors were rescued. Bill Milhomme's extensive research about Father Conway has recently brought many details to light in a May 27, 2013 Republican-American newspaper article:
