This petition is important because it is essential to show the government that they can't bully the elderly. Texana Hollis is the 101 year old Detroit woman who was evicted from her home in September of 2011. After the heart-breaking story made headline news across the country, HUD decided that the bad publicity was more than it was worth, and told Mrs Hollis that she could move back into the home she had lived in for nearly 60 years. Fast-forward to January 2012. HUD now says that Mrs. Hollis' home is "unsanitary and unsafe" for a person to live in, and that since they now own it, they will not let her live there.
If HUD were going to sell this house that they now own, they would have to bring it up to code, but they've said they don't want to pay for it. So instead of fixing up a home that they are going to repair anyway when they sell it, they are content to let the house sit. They are basically saying to Mrs Hollis, "If we can't have it, you can't either." It isn't right. Sign if you agree that HUD should help repair Mrs. Hollis' home so that she can live out the rest of her life where she wants.
