Animals need constant attention, sometimes expensive veterinary care, patient and gentle guidance, and someone who will commit to caring for them for life, and some of those winners may not be able to do this. Animals that are given out to people who never really wanted them, or get on a whim are often turned over to shelters, passed along to anyone who will take them, chained up in a backyard or worse abandoned and end up homeless. In a lot of states it is also against the law to give away animals as prizes.
