The people of the United States need individual protections from the powerful gas industry as they pursue fracking. Imagine who would be on the hook if BP had walked away from the Gulf.

Questions:  What will a limited-means landowner be able to [quickly] do to when his water well goes bad, stream going along his property goes bad, kids or dairy cows start getting sick from what appears to him, the after-effects of nearby hydro-fracking?  He has few options.  How does a family even survive without moving and going bankrupt because they have to abandon their land?  How can they recover? How can he then possibly take on a long-gone driller or neighbor, and prove in the courts, against well-financed companies if they even still exist, their disruption in the subsurface has released all kinds of chemicals long ago locked in the rock, into the groundwater and/or seeping into the air?

And what if even the courts agree?  Drillers and gas companies come and purposefully go?  Where is a fund to remedy the damage or to appropriately displace hundreds if not thousands of people?

The chemicals involved in hydro-fracking are only a small part of the noxious and poisonous chemicals that are leased from the shale.  The poisonous-to-humans and animals natural gas, sulfur, acid, and other chemicals originally locked in the shale and released from the process are not confined to the gas well. Are you going to make sure multi-billion dollar dedicated cleanup-funds are set-aside before drilling starts, so that the people you represent are protected from the possible adverse effects?

Are you going to make sure the burden of proof needs to be minimal – little time and no money, to receive appropriate assistance and compensation?

If the gas industry so confident that fracking is safe, clean, and not bad for the environment, then let them set aside and maintain these funds for 20 years out as part of the cost of doing business.

Imagine if BP wasn’t so large and, instead, just walked away from the Gulf spill.  Who would have to bail out the Gulf and cleanup?

Here, neighbors are drilling in each other’s back yards.  Do you want to leave the taxpayers on the hook for bad technology/geology practices related to hydro-fracking?  Or do you want to just dispose of the families affected?

What legacy are YOU going to leave?
