Urge OSU to provide shelter for its livestock
The Issue
Ranked the 10th public university in the nation by The Lombardi Program on Measuring University Performance and with total endowments valued at over $2 billion dollars, it is appalling that The Ohio State University does not provide the basic necessity of shelter to its livestock. I drive past the OSU Beef & Equine Center on a daily basis (Address: 3638 Kays Ave., Dublin, Oh 43017, Phone: 614-459-4124) and was shocked to find that the cattle are forced to live outside 24/7 in harsh winter weather with not even a lean-to for refuge. This barbaric and cruel practice, referred to as "out wintering", leaves herds outside all winter long, exposing them to freezing temperatures and harsh winds. The calves are not even spared and must try to endure the long winter months. It is cheaper for a few cows to die than to build a basic barn. However, when caring for sentient creatures, the almighty dollar should not be the driving force. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. Please urge OSU to meet the basic needs of their livestock by providing shelter during the harsh winter months.
