The Needham (MA) Board of Selectmen and School Committee: Put children's health and the town's best interests ahead of the desires of Cricket Field abutters.

The Needham (MA) Board of Selectmen and School Committee: Put children's health and the town's best interests ahead of the desires of Cricket Field abutters.

The Issue

Backroom maneuvering that’s underway in Needham has squarely placed the interest of a very small group of citizens ahead of the safety of our town’s children, responsible financial stewardship, an open democratic process, and basic fairness.

The Board of Selectmen seems poised to pass a resolution on Oct. 22nd stating that no funds should be made available for the study of Cricket Field in the Feasibility Study.  Furthermore, they are pressuring the state’s school building committee and our town’s School Committee to go along with their ill-considered push to remove Cricket Field from even being studied.

Most people don't know that removing Cricket Field as an option has huge town-wide impact – it could lead to a more expensive project, a much larger Mitchell School, or townwide elementary school redistricting.

We’re not advocating building a school at Cricket Field, but rather for a Feasibility Study that does what it’s supposed to do.  And we recoil at the fact that Needham’s many voices were silenced by town leaders around an issue whose outcome will affect us for decades to come.  We believe that Needham needs to take it slow, undertake a true Feasibility Study, hear from everyone impacted (rather than just one group), and keep our options open.
