Beirut Theatre is going to close down due to the decision of the owners of the real estate.

This theatre represents the cultural and theatrical heritage of the Lebanese citizens for accomodating most of the theatrical movements since 1965 till now. It has played important social and cultural roles throughout many wars, and thus it has become the never dying heart of the cultural city.

We demand that the Ministry of Culture acknowledges its own responsibilities and legal obligations by classifying Beirut theatre as a cultural property. This prerogative granted to the Minister of Culture by the force of the laws protects this space against any threat of demolition, closure or any change that may affect its cultural and artistic usage. The passive role that  the ministry have adopted until now is not justified and will not be accepted as long as legal and administrative measures can still be adopted by the government according to the current laws.

This is not the first theatre to close down. Save our cultural life!
