STOP the Proposed Budget Cuts for Human Services
STOP the Proposed Budget Cuts for Human Services
The Issue
I am deeply concerned that Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable population is facing a critical threat. Governor Corbett has proposed a significant and unprecedented budget cut for the Human Services Fund. This Fund is not a welfare-based funding system; it is a fund that aids uninsured individuals and families throughout the state of Pennsylvania for much needed services.
1 in 4 Americans are affected by mental illness each year. This affects all of us.
Many individuals won’t seek help because of the lack of understanding about mental health issues. If more people understood that individuals like Kurt Cobain, Princess Diana and Vincent Van Gogh, were also affected by mental illness, then they might feel comfortable in getting the help they need.
Budget cuts will drive this issue to the back rooms and out of the public eye – understanding won't increase, it will diminish. The system, which has made incredible strides in educating the public over the past decade, will be forced to return to the days of institutionalization and shame.
Governor Corbett's proposal is reckless and unwarranted. It will place an unnecessary burden on taxpayers and the systemic repercussions will be devastating.
We can stop this! Please join me and all others concerned with human rights, and the safety of our friends and family members who are affected by mental illness.
Sign my petition! and tell Governor Corbett we will not stand for these policy decisions.
