The Florida black bear is perfect symbol of Florida, and brings together Florida's past, present and future. Further, the increase in human population continues to add pressure to the bears, their food sources, and their habitats. The Camden apartments were built in the middle of a prime bear habitat. As Florida continues to grow, FFWC is going to have to develop more progressive policies for these animals that model policies of coexistence that are already in place in other states (like California).

Another key reason is because the residents of central Florida appreciate these animals and do not want to see them continually slaughtered at the expense of urban sprawl. There are alternatives to killing a mother and her cub, if only FFWC would get more creative and work with the community.
