Maintain Blankenship Field and Jack Armstrong Stadium and replace visitors seating.

The Issue

Blankenship Field and Jack Armstrong Stadium have been home to football in the city of Oak Ridge since 1943.  This venue is the home football field for Oak Ridge High School, Jefferson Middle School, Robertsville Middle School and occasionally the Oak Ridge Boys Club. The Oak Ridge football tradition holds one National Championship, eight State Championships, and one State Runner Up. Oak Ridge Football has won state titles or played in State Championship games in every decade since the 1950's.  This program and this community deserve a world class football facility. Please sign this petition to encourage the Oak Ridge City Council, City Manager, and Board of Education to work together to fund the replacement of the visitors seating with permanent stands, and to maintain the home stands and steps so as to stop further decay of this facility.

I have no idea if the entire petition is represented by the email I have received. I cannot and will not sign onto this site using my Facebook account because I have had enough of "sharing," especially of my "friends" list. I speak only for myself and not for the whole of council. It is gratifying that so many people outside of the city are also interested in Blankenship Field. I believe that the city and the school board have done a very reasonable job maintaining the field. As for the visitor bleachers, they are being demolished to prevent risk. Some consideration is being given to the city and the school board cooperating to replace those stands with movable bleachers that could be used for multiple venues: soccer, rowing, festivals, etc. Meanwhile, there is plenty of room on the permanent "home" side to accommodate both home and visitor attendees. Given the current status of demands on the citizens' funds, I believe that football stadium enhancements fall into the category of "nice" rather than "necessary." It seems to me that this is a job for the boosters. Seek out champions for this cause who will solicit funds from commercial and individual sources. When the petition list reaches 500, if everyone pitched in $100 there would be a $50,000 fund to build new guest bleachers or other amenities. I want to thank everyone for their interest.
