We call upon the APA to properly apply its own non-discrimination policy by developing a comprehensive accessibility policy and striking an advisory group to oversee its implementation.

The Issue

At present, APA events, services, communications, and resources (including divisional conferences and the APA website) readily available for the use and enjoyment of nondisabled members of the association and of the profession more broadly are not as readily available to a range of disabled people. Such inequitable practices contribute significantly to the hostile environment that disabled philosophers confront in the profession (and academia more broadly) and encourage their departure from it, reproducing the underrepresentation of disabled philosophers in the discipline and the university. The immediate development of a comprehensive accessibility policy and steadfast oversight of its implementation would go some distance to ensure that disabled philosophers are equally recognized and represented in the APA in particular and can participate equally in the profession more generally. For further information about (in)accessibility and the APA, see the document linked to here:

Responded
Today, three current and past members of the APA's committee on inclusiveness in the profession—Teresa Blankmeyer Burke, Adam Cureton, and Anita Silvers—issued a statement on accessibility from APA members with disabilities. The statement describes the APA's practices regarding accessibility accommodations and responds to unfounded accusations of discrimination. Read the statement from APA members with disabilities on accessibility: http://www.apaonline.org/resource/resmgr/Inclusiveness_Reports/statementonaccessibility.pdf All members of the profession, and in particular members with disabilities and those who have signed this petition, are encouraged to read the statement.
