On behalf of the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), I extend our deepest appreciation for the extraordinary speech you delivered in Cairo. Your words hail a new era for bridging the cultural, political and social divides between Muslims and our neighbors across the world.      IMAN is a community organization on Chicago’s Southwest Side that works for social justice, provides a range of services and cultivates the arts in urban communities. As a Muslim organization, we hold dear your acknowledgment of the multifaceted roles that American Muslims and Islam have played in our country since its inception.      Beginning with the millions of enslaved Africans who helped build the very foundation of America, Muslims have been an integral part of our nation’s history. The hope, compassion and faith that are central to our spiritual traditions shine through the many dynamic ways in which American Muslims contribute to our country today.    It’s that spirit that drives IMAN’s work for change and informs how we organize in coalition with churches, synagogues and other groups for safer communities, better schools and dignified work opportunities. It’s what moves us to offer a free health clinic, transitional housing and career services for Arab, African American and Latino residents of our communities. It’s what inspires us to bring our Community Cafes and other arts and cultural programming to thousands of people every year.  We thank you for advancing bold new ideals for Americans and the world. We are hopeful that the contributions of American Muslims will help you realize your beautiful vision for positive social change.
