Term limits and campaign finance reform
Term limits and campaign finance reform
The Issue
Having term limits (two terms will be the lifetime maximum) will return the focus to representing the American people rather than corporate and special interest friendly relationships we now have in our government. Every elected person whether Congress or Senate will be paid for their job only while in office. They will have the same health insurance options we have, paid for only while in office, and they will have the same Social Security that all Americans do.
Upon leaving office, they will pay their own Social Security and health insurance. They will be off of our payroll. These two factors will help them to make good laws and rules for us all when they are part of our systems. Having a two term, lifetime maximum, limit will encourage true representation rather than making a career of playing politics at our expense. It will also encourage all that run for office to actually work hard to deliver their campaign promises. After all, if they don't live up to what they campaigned for, they will not have a second term.
Campaign finance reform must be implemented to keep corporations and special interest groups from having the power that they now have. A limit of $1,000.00 per contributor to anyone running for office will keep the playing field more level. It will also discourage any allegiance to corporations and special interest groups. Our Senate and Congress must work and represent the individuals that elect them.
A $1,000.00 cap on campaign contributions will also make it less attractive for corporations and special interest groups to lobby in our states capitals and our nation's capital. There can be no other monies or gifts given to anyone running for office.
