Tell Willoughby-Eastlake Schools: Add Sexual Orientation to Anti-Discrimination Policy

Tell Willoughby-Eastlake Schools: Add Sexual Orientation to Anti-Discrimination Policy

The Issue

Earlier this Fall semester, an Ohio woman videotaped a football game between North High School and Willoughby South High just outside of Cleveland. The tape became famous not so much for the football game, but because it illustrated some rampant homophobia that existed between the two schools. Fans of North High School would chant "Powder Blue Faggots" at the Willoughby team, and the Willoughby team would chant, "Halloween Homos" at the North High team.

Nothing like a football game served with a side dish of anti-gay chanting.

Now, a former alum of the school district is pushing for the school district to systematically address the type of culture that allows anti-gay chanting like this to thrive, and to do so by adding sexual orientation to the school district's anti-discrimination policy.

Urge the Willoughby-Eastlake School District to do just that: revise their anti-discrimination policy so that all folks in their district, regardless of sexual orientation, are protected from discrimination and harassment.
