It may be shocking to hear, but America's water supply has a drug problem. When folks throw away unused pills and medications, they get sent to a landfill, where the drugs leach into waterways through runoff. The same thing happens when drugs get dumped down the sink or toilet because wastewater treatment plants can't filter out medications. Consumers and wildlife, therefore, end up drinking down water that's loaded with drug residues.

San Francisco recently proposed its Safe Drug Disposal Ordinance, a measure where pharmaceutical companies would have to pick up and properly dispose of unused prescription and non-prescription drugs. If passed, the law could help clean up the city's waterways and serve as model legislation that other towns could mimic. Unfortunately, Big Pharma is working hard to block the measure.
