Tell Republican Leaders to Attend Obama's Health Summit--and Come Ready to Compromise

The Issue

Republican leaders are using President Obama's call for a bipartisan televised health care summit on Feb. 25 as an opportunity for political grandstanding. Tell them it's time to stop the political posturing and start working with Democrats on health care reforms that will help Americans who are uninsured and drowning in medical debt.

On Feb. 12, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sent formal invitations to the summit to the senior leadership of the House and Senate. Republicans so far have refused to agree to attend.

The summit is a chance for small groups of influential leaders from both parties to talk substantively about the issues surrounding reform. It could be one of Obama's last chances to salvage a health care bill a year in the making as many lawmakers and the general population say they're ready to give up and move on to a jobs bill.

Obama has expressed his desire for compromise, even at the expense of key Democratic porposals. House Republican leader John Boehner, however, said he thinks the summit might be a "trap."

Now that they have the invitation in hand, tell House Republican leader John Boehner and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell to attend the health care summit to hammer out real solutions for the American people.
