Tell President Obama: Say No to Loaded Guns in National Parks!

Tell President Obama: Say No to Loaded Guns in National Parks!

The Issue

We have exciting news! As you may recall, the Bush Administration put in effect last minute regulations before leaving office that allowed individuals to carry loaded, concealed guns into the parks. Park rangers, including seven former Directors of the Park Service, opposed the new rule fearing there would be increased wildlife poaching, vandalism of historic resources, and gun-related accidents. On January 6, the Association of National Park Rangers, the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees, and NPCA joined forces and filed a lawsuit to overturn the rules.

Thankfully, we were victorious! On March 19, a federal judge ruled that the process used by the Bush Administration to create the regulation was "astoundingly flawed" because they "ignored substantial information in the administrative record concerning environmental impacts." The earlier, ranger-supported, Reagan-era regulation requiring guns in parks to be unloaded and put away is again in place--at least for now.

Now the Obama Administration must tell the court by April 20 what it plans to do.

We need your help in urging President Obama to abandon the Bush regulation, which puts park resources, wildlife, and park visitors at risk!

The President needs to hear TODAY from park supporters, like you, that the commonsense Reagan regulation has been working well and strikes the right balance between respecting the rights of gun owners and protecting park resources, wildlife, and visitors. Under the ranger-supported Reagan regulation, gun owners must keep their guns unloaded and put away. Doesn't that seem reasonable? We think so too!

Don't wait. Please write President Obama today and tell him to support park rangers and abandon the Bush regulation's dangerous policy change that puts wildlife and visitors at risk. Take action!

Thank you!
