Tell Newspaper: Report on Female Candidates' Positions, NOT Their Looks
The Issue
A local St. Louis's paper, The Riverfront Times, joined the sexist punditry this week with a article on potential Senate candidate Sarah Steelman -- by wondering how hot she is, and if her attractiveness affects her political fortunes.
Sexism of this sort directed at female candidates actually hurts women's campaigns, studies have shown. And the media largely goes unpunished for biased reporting that treats men and women differently.
Tell the Riverfront Times to use better editorial judgment and treat women public figures with the same respect and judge them by the same criteria as their male counterparts. It's 2010 after all.
