Roller Rink: Let Muslim Women Skate

Roller Rink: Let Muslim Women Skate

The Issue

Two Muslim women were recently told by the manager of a Connecticut roller-skating rink that they couldn't skate unless they removed their headscarves.

The two women, who were wearing the traditional Muslim hijab at the time of the incident, said they were "mortified" after being barred from skating at the Ron-A-Roll rink in Vernon, CT.

The manager of the rink told the women that he had to enforce the "No Hats. No Head wear" policy. He said he would make no exception for the hijab.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations has filed a complaint with the Connecticut Human Rights Commission against the roller rink.

However, Ron-A-Roll officials aren't backing down and are standing behind the decision to ask Muslim women to remove their hijabs. Rink owners claim that a headscarf could present a danger to skaters if it fell off.
