Tell Crossroads Television: No More Anti-Gay Hatred on Your Television Network
The Issue
The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) recently ruled that a program on Crossroads Television, WordTV with Charles McVety, violated Canadian law by airing comments that fostered violence toward populations on the basis of sexual orientation, nationality, religion, and gender identity.
Indeed, on his show, McVety has said that gay people prey on children, and work to convert young people into homosexuality. He even labeled pride parades "a pedophile's dream." With regard to Islam, McVety has said that Islam is "a danger in our midst." McVety even blamed Haiti for bringing on the January 2010 earthquake because of a prevalence of voodoo.
This type of language and dangerous misinformation doesn't belong on Canadian television. In response to the CBSC ruling, Crossroads Television temporarily removed McVety's program from the air. But we need a pledge from Crossroads that McVety's program will not come back on, so long as it continues to spread false and dangerous information about people on the basis of sexual orientation, religion, nationality, or gender identity. This is a program that, in its current form, is creating a climate where violence and discrimination can thrive. It doesn't belong on the air, and Crossroads Television needs to act accordingly to make sure their airwaves aren't being used to create a climate of fear and violence.
