Tell Congress to Oppose S.510 & HR 2749
The Issue
Food Safety is an important concern because we all must eat and want to feel confident that our food is both healthy and safe (not lifeless, irradiated, or bathed in ammonia). Current legislation before Congress fails to seriously focus on the real sources of foodborne outbreaks and causes of food safety problems such as those resulting from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs), genetically-modified foods, pesticide/herbicide residues, BPA in containers, imported foods, etc. Watch Coburn's video.
Neither S.510 nor H.R. 2749 touch problems with meats (numerous recalls for E.coli); instead both bills propose to give FDA even greater power with less accountability. FDA has shown that it does not respect individuals' rights to obtain healthy, quality foods of their choice; the agency has stated, as a matter of public record in a recent lawsuit: "Plaintiffs' assertion of a fundamental right to their own bodily and physical health, which includes what foods they do and do not choose to consume for themselves and their families' is similarly unavailing because plaintiffs do not have a fundamental right to obtain any food they wish." Such an agency has repeatedly failed to protect public health and seek the best interest of the average American.
Tell Congress to get serious about food safety and reject S.510 and H.R. 2749. FDA needs to stop wasting taxpayer dollars harassing small food producers and start scrutinizing multi-state mega food producers and imports. Instead of favoring the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, FDA needs to encourage the local food movement and support the decentralization of America's food supply enabling us to be less dependent on imports.
