Tell U.S. Attorney General: enough "monitoring" high gas prices ... launch Grand Jury investigation!

The Issue

Wall Street speculators keep on changing their stories as to why gas prices are so high.  As Senator Sanders said:

"... There is mounting evidence that the sky-high price of gas has nothing to do with the fundamentals of supply and demand and everything to do with Wall Street speculators jacking up oil and gas prices in the energy futures market."  Senator Sander's website also points out that "the CEO of Exxon Mobil, Rex Tillerson, recently testified before Congress that Wall Street speculators are driving up the price of oil as much as 40 percent. Goldman Sachs has said that at least 20 percent of the price of oil comes from excessive speculation."

First we were told that the civil unrest in the Middle East was the cultprit for crude oil prices being so high, thereby resulting in higher prices at the pump.  We were then told that with Osama bin Laden's death, prices at the pump would drop.  Since that did not happen, we were then told a contradictory story: that crude oil prices were not directly tied to prices at the pump after all.

We were also preemptively told that refinaries might be impacted by flooding along the Mississipi River or that "demand will grow and supply will fall" (which is the most convenient line to fall back on when speculators have run out of excuses).  Even in light of the recent announcement of the release of strategic oil reserves, it looks like gas prices in some areas are STILL not coming down or worse: are even on the rise!  Frankly, it just seems that speculators are really just making up reasons to jack up prices as they go along.

Enough is enough: Wall Street speculators have got to be stopped.  They’re hurting the health of our economy and they’re hurting America.  Lest we forget, these speculators are the same folks that have done their part to bring about food pricing crises around the world.  In the end and as usual, people living paycheck-to-paycheck here in the U.S. and around the world are the ones that are impacted the most by out-of-control prices on gas and food.

Tell the U.S. Attorney General: monitoring prices at the pump is not enough!  As Senator Richard Blumenthal (D) recently stated, a Grand Jury investigation and pressing criminal charges might be necessary.  Sign this petition or contact the U.S. Attorney General directly at: http://www.justice.gov/contact-us.html
