Tell UMES: it is not in their best interest to have Glora Mayfield Banks as a Commencement Speaker

The Issue

Gloria Mayfield banks is a successful National Sales Director (NSD) with Mary Kay cosmetics. However, Mary Kay cosmetics is a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scheme, which closely mimicks illegal pyramid schemes. They jump through the loophole of having a "dual marketing plan" which is legal only because there is an end product, technically. Truth is, the only way to make it in Mary Kay, or any dual marketing plan, is to recruit, recruit, recruit.

In Mary Kay, recently many recruiters have gone after college students to recruit them into the scheme. It is believed that Mrs. Banks isn't just there to honor your university at this time of year, but to set her sights on recruiting young women. With student loans coming close to being due, the tight economy, and a lack of jobs, this isn't a chance to be an enlightening speaker, but to recruit and frontload (convincing new consultants they need an obscene amount of inventory, even if they can't afford it) so as to gain commission checks from their purchases.

With an MBA from Harvard, one would thing that Mrs. Banks would have business savvy, and an understanding of the economy on a grander level than most, and she may very well have that. But, she has used her MBA to join a company that preaches enriching women's lives, and yet the company practices are anything but. Letting a woman like Mrs. Banks speak at your ceremony would be counter productive, especially concerning your female graduates, to what they all have been working for.

We sincerely hope that you consider what is said herein. A recruiting video of Mrs. Banks' has also been included as an example.
