Uganda's Parliament is currently debating an anti-homosexuality bill that would take drastic measures to "wipe out" LGBT people from the country. Among the provisions called for in this bill would be imprisonment for LGBT people, death penalty sentences for HIV-positive people, and jail terms for straight allies who support LGBT rights. Urge the Ugandan Ambassador to the United States to take a message back to his country that human rights activists won't stand for this kind of barbaric legislation.

Uganda Must Dismiss Immoral Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Parliament

Dear Ambassador Kamunanwire, Deputy Ssentongo, and Dr. Rugunda:

As Uganda's Parliament debates a proposed bill that would create new violent standards for dealing with homosexuality, I urge you to pressure your government to dismiss this bill.

Imprisoning and executing people who identity as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender is not only a violation of every international human rights standard, it's an action that violates the tenets of nearly every world religion. For Uganda to establish laws that unjustly imprison or murder a group of people on the basis of sexual orientation is a monumental step backward.

This new law would also violate principles set forth in Uganda's constitution, as well as the African Charter on Human and People's Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and many other international treaties to which Uganda is a party. It's in the worst interests of Uganda to move forward in support of this bill, and will severely impact the reputation of Uganda on a global level.

I urge you to call for the dismissal of this anti-gay bill in Uganda's parliament. While issues pertaining to sexual orientation and homosexuality can be difficult to discuss in many regions of the world, the solution is not imprisonment and capital punishment for an entire group of people. This bill is bad policy, and if passed will cement Uganda's reputation as one of the biggest human rights violators in the world.

This bill must be dismissed. Please urge your political leadership to do just that.
