On Top Chef and Iron Chef, foie gras is served with alarming regularity.

Foie gras is one of the cruelest animal products on the market. It is produced by forcing a long metal pipe down the throats of ducks and geese and force-feeding them massive amounts of grain. This produces a diseased and swollen liver, also known as foie gras.

According the ASPCA "The birds' livers become so enlarged…that according to documentation by veterinarians, the animals must experience unspeakable pain and suffering. Birds have literally exploded from these forced feedings. The results of necropsies on dead birds that have been force-fed reveal ruptured livers, throat damage, esophageal trauma, and food spilling from the dead animals' throats and out of their nostrils."

This video shows just how cruel the foie gras product truly is.

Both the Food Network and Bravo have shown compassion in the past. Top Chef aired two vegetarian challenges on their shows in 2009, and Iron Chef recently aired an vegetarian challenge.

Ask them to take foie gras off their plates, and keep compassion on the menu for upcoming shows.

Please Stop Using Foie Gras on Cooking Competition Shows

Greetings,

I am writing to ask you to stop serving foie gras on your respective cooking competition shows, Iron Chef and Top Chef, because of the inherent cruelty involved in production of this "delicacy."

Foie gras is produced by forcing a long metal pipe down the throats of ducks and geese and force-feeding them massive amounts of grain. This produces a diseased and swollen liver, also known as foie gras.

According the ASPCA "The birds' livers become so enlarged…that according to documentation by veterinarians, the animals must experience unspeakable pain and suffering. The results of necropsies on dead birds that have been force-fed reveal ruptured livers, throat damage, esophageal trauma, and food spilling from the dead animals' throats and out of their nostrils."

Both of your networks have shown compassion in the past. Last year, Top Chef featured vegetarian Natalie Portman and vegan Zooey Deschanel on two separate shows. Iron Chef recently aired a vegetarian challenge featuring Dirt Candy chef Amanda Cohen. I would like to thank you for highlighting compassionate eating during these episodes.

Please take foie gras off the Top Chef and Iron Chef plates, and keep compassion on the menu for upcoming shows.
