Tell the US Justice Department to Compensate Guatemalan Syphilis Experiment Victims

The Issue

From 1946 to 1948, the US Public Health Service deliberately infected upwards of 1,500 Guatemalan prisoners, mental health patients, and soldiers with syphilis in order to test the effects of penicillin on the disease. The subjects of the experiment were never informed they were being infected, and many were not given adequate doses of medicine to cure them afterward.

On March 18th, 700 victims of the experiment filed a class action lawsuit asking the US Government to compensate them and their families. Last fall, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius acknowledged and apologized for the abhorrent research, but the US Justice Department has given no indication that they will willingly compensate the victims.

Tell the US Justice Department that it's time to take real action to rectify the horrifying, unethical medical research carried out by the government with US taxpayer money. Let them know than apology is not enough and financial compensation must be made.
