Tell the U.S. Government: All Students Need Choice-in-Dissection

Tell the U.S. Government: All Students Need Choice-in-Dissection

The Issue

Each year, millions of animals are dissected in science classes across the United States. Frogs are captured from the wild every year for use in classroom dissections, and amphibian populations are declining due to dissection.

Currently, there is no federal law that protects a student who refuses to dissect an animal. Only ten states have enacted such student choice laws. Of these ten states, six require the student's parent sign on with the student's objection to dissection. Students may choose not to dissect out of concern for animals or for the environment, objections that their parents may not share.

Students should have the right to choose not to dissect on ethical grounds without their parents permission. There are many humane alternatives to dissection. Ask President Obama to protect a student's right to learn without cruelty.
