Tell the Aurora Colorado City Council to Stop Breed Discrimination

Tell the Aurora Colorado City Council to Stop Breed Discrimination

The Issue

Aurora Colorado enacted a breed discriminatory law targeting "pit bulls" years ago during the height of pit bull hysteria. Now because of the U.S. Department of Justice's ruling that cities can't discriminate against pit bull service dogs, they are reworking their ordinance to comply with federal law.

Studies show that canine profiling fails to enhance public safety. Indeed, Topeka, Kansas just repealed their breed discriminatory ordinance because it was ineffective and extremely expensive to enforce. Determining a dog's heritage is not easy. A recent study by Dr. Victoria Voith found that animal shelters are correct in identifying a dog's heritage only 25% of the time when they compared the visual identification to the dog's DNA.

Aurora should follow Topeka's lead and enact a comprehensive reckless owner/dangerous dog law that protects citizens from all dangerous dogs and stop canine profiling.
