For years we've been told that Subway is the healthy alternative to traditional fast food. With Jared Fogle's weight loss success from eating a diet made of Subway sandwiches, and trusting that a turkey sandwich with vegetables on whole grain bread should be a clearly healthier choice over a burger, who wouldn't believe them?
However, consumers who've done their due diligence will find that upon inspection of Subway's nutrition information, available on their web site, a common ingredient in their breads, condiments, cookies and meats is high fructose corn syrup. In fact, in Subway's 9-Grain Wheat bread, there is more high fructose corn syrup than there are whole grains.
There's nothing healthy about this. It's not a fresh ingredient. Quite the contrary, it's definitively processed. High fructose corn syrup is one of the culprits in the obesity epidemic, and research at Princeton calls it worse than sugar.
What is it? High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a syrup made from cornstarch treated with an enzyme that converts some of the glucose to fructose, which is sweeter. Fructose is more readily converted to fat by your liver than is sucrose (sugar), increasing the amount of fat in your bloodstream. Because it is cheaper than sugar and has the ability to preserve the shelf life of processed foods it has become a standard of the processed food industry.
Tell Subway you really do want to "Eat Fresh," but that it's only possible if they remove high fructose corn syrup from their products. Other delis have managed, why can't they?

Greetings,
This petition comes as a request by health-conscious Americans who want to continue to believe that Subway is the healthier alternative to fast food. However, given Subway's reliance on high fructose corn syrup, we can no longer include Subway as part of our diets. Your tag line is "Eat Fresh", and we very much want to eat fresh foods, but high fructose corn syrup is as processed as they come, leaving us little choice but to stop eating at your restaurants.
For years you've sold us on the idea that Subway fits right in with our healthy lifestyles and is a great way to manage our weight. However, more research is revealed about the detrimental role high fructose corn syrup plays on the wellness and weight of our bodies. I refuse to be another statistic in the obesity epidemic.
Thank you for hearing our request, living up to your "Eat Fresh" statement, and for taking action to find more wholesome ingredients to create the foods you serve us. Your sandwich competitors have managed to do it, now it's your turn.
