Tell Senator Mark Grisanti: Support Marriage Equality in New York
The Issue
There's a New York State Senator catching the attention of pop star and LGBT activist Lady Gaga. His name is Sen. Mark Grisanti, and GaGa has called on her fans to e-mail him and encourage him to support marriage equality.
"There's a senator here in Buffalo that's on the fence about whether or not to vote for this particular bill and I would like to give you all his e-mail," Lady Gaga said to the crowd at her Buffalo concert at the HSBC Arena on Friday. "His name is Sen. Mark Grisanti."
Her Facebook page sang the same tune later that night. "Buffalo, we need SEN.GRISANTI to help pass NY STATE MARRIAGE BILL #IWasBornThisWay," she wrote. Grisanti told voters that he is “unalterably opposed to gay marriage” back in 2008. But now it appears that there might be some room for discussions with Sen. Grisanti on the issue of marriage equality.
"Lady Gaga is a terrific world-renowned performer, entitled to her opinion," Grisanti spokesman Doug Curella said in a statement. "That is why our country is so great because you have the opportunity to have your voice be heard, and reach out to your local representatives."
Marriage equality is a hot topic in New York, with openly gay Senator Tom Duane set to re-introduce a marriage equality bill in the near future. There is talk that he would like a Republican to co-sponsor the bill, and Senator Grisanti might just be that Republican. That is why it is so important that he knows how crucial his support is to the cause.
"Sen. Grisanti has already reached out to the local chapter of Marriage Equality New York, and is meeting with them next week," Curella said. "Additionally, I have personally met with the Outspoken for Equality in Albany, and we had a very informative and constructive conversation. We look forward to learning more about their issues and concerns with regards to same-sex marriage."
