How We Won

Sep 30, 2010

After the U.S. Senate debated a measure to repeal the U.S. military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, a staff member from Sen. Saxby Chambliss' office went onto popular gay blog Joe.My.God and wrote that "All faggots must die."  The comment drew strong criticism, and more than 400 Change.org members urged Sen. Chambliss to condemn the remarks and fire the staffer. On September 30, Sen. Chambliss issued a statement saying that he apologized for the remark, and was terminating the staff member responsible.

After every single Republican voted to filibuster and prevent "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" legislation from moving forward in the U.S. Senate, a staff person from Sen. Saxby Chambliss' Georgia office took to the gay blogosphere, and left a comment on popular blog Joe.My.God. That comment, left under the name "Jimmy," went a little something like this:

"All Faggots Must Die."

Joe Jervis, who writes the Joe.My.God blog, touched base with his readership and together folks were able to sleuth out that the IP address of the commenter belonged to someone inside Sen. Chambliss' Georgia office. Three cheers for gay people in the IT field!

But a huge, jaw-dropping look of awe and disgust for Sen. Saxby Chambliss. This type of rhetoric is unacceptable in any form, let alone coming from someone employed by the federal government.

Email Sen. Saxby Chambliss' office right now, letting Sen. Chambliss know that he must address this incident, and that it's his job to create a culture within his office where no one feels like they can get away with expressing a "gays must die" sentiment.

Apologize and investigate comment that said gay people should die

Dear. Sen. Saxby Chambliss,

After you voted in favor of a filibuster that prevented legislation that would have repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" from moving forward, a staff person in your Georgia office took to the gay blogosphere and left a comment on popular blog Joe.My.God. That comment, listed under the name Jimmy, said: "All faggots must die."

This type of language is foul, inappropriate, and deeply offensive, and should be condemned. No one employed by the federal government should be allowed to use such language, and coming on the heels of a vote on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," this language is all the more hurtful to members of the LGBT community.

I urge your office to condemn this type of rhetoric, to publicly apologize for it coming out on one of your computers, and to handle this matter with the staff person involved in a professional and appropriate manner. This is unacceptable. Your office needs to recognize that.

Thank you for your time.
