On May 3rd, Representative Sally Kerns apologized on the floor of the Oklahoma House of Representatives and was officially reprimanded by her colleagues.
Cassi Peters, Sally's List Political Director, said, "through this petition, Sally’s List has demonstrated that if a few passionate progressives band together, a difference can be made. Without pressure from Sally’s List and other groups, Kern’s abhorrent statements would most likely have been ignored by the media, the state Republican Party, and the electorate.”
April 27th in debate on SJR15 (a bill to end affirmative action in Oklahoma) on the Oklahoma House of Representatives floor, Sally Kern said: "I’m a woman and I never felt discriminated against. I saw a lot of black people who didn’t want to work as hard. Women don’t want to work as hard as men." Let Sally Kern know that she DOES NOT speak for Oklahoma women. Women in Oklahoma work just as hard if not harder than their male counterparts.
You Do Not Speak for Me
Representative Sally Kern:
You DO NOT speak for me. On April 27th, during floor debate on SJR15 (which will abolish affirmative action in Oklahoma) you stated that "women do not want to work as hard as men." You do not speak for all Oklahoma women.
Many Oklahoma women successfully balance their work and family lives. Caring about their families should not disqualify them from succeeding in their careers. Oklahoma women currently rank 45th in the nation in managerial and professional jobs. These professional women are still only making 77 cents to every man's dollar. What Oklahoma women need is the opportunity to succeed and to earn a fair wage. What they don't need is your negative rhetoric telling them that they do not want to work as hard as their male counterparts.
We are asking you to apologize to the countless women in Oklahoma who work tirelessly to provide for their families. We are asking you to apologize to the young women who are currently in college studying and striving for a successful career. We are asking you to apologize to our daughters and granddaughters for telling them that in Oklahoma, they don't deserve to be treated equally in the professional sphere because "they don't want to work as hard as men."
Your negative rhetoric does nothing to help Oklahoma women move forward. It only serves to reinforce our ranking as one of the unhealthiest states in this nation for women and their children.
