The Situation:

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights are complex in the Americas. The British, French, Spanish and Portuguese colonists, who settled most of the Americas, brought with them their Christian religion and customs from Europe. These attitudes continue to influence society in these countries. In particular, the Roman Catholic Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, both of which oppose legal recognition of homosexual relationships, are active in the politics of the Americas.

Acceptance of LGBT persons in the Americas varies widely. Same-sex marriages have been recognized in Canada nationwide since 2005 and in Argentina since 2010. Same-sex marriage in Mexico is recognized nationwide, while in the United States, same-sex marriages are recognized by several states, but not the federal government. Same-sex marriages performed in the Netherlands are recognized in Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. Furthermore, some other nations have laws recognizing other types of same-sex unions, as well as LGBT adoption and military service by LGBT people.

The Problem:

However, many other nations, particularly in the former British West Indies, continue to criminalize homosexuality. These countries include Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.  

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in Barbadosface legal risks not experienced by non-LGBT citizens. Homosexual acts are illegal in Barbados, with a life sentence; but the law is rarely enforced. The law is currently in effect, but under review.

The Possible solution:

Robyn Rihanna Fenty (born February 20, 1988), better known as simply Rihanna  is a Barbadian R&B recording artist and songwriter. Born in Saint Michael, Barbados, Rihanna moved to the United States at the age of 16 to pursue a recording career.

Rihanna knows Barbados and the Caribbean better than most people. She knows that there is much prejudice against LGBT people in Barbados and throughout the Caribbean. Ask Rihanna to be an ambassador of LGBT rights in the Caribbean, to get involved and try to change this dramatic reality. Tell Rihanna you have hope that she can teach the Caribbean to respect and embrace diversity. It's time to change!
