This week, Michigan Republican Dave Agema announced that he wants to introduce a bill that "says if a cop catches you doing a felony and you have no ID and he suspects you are an illegal, he can check." Also, Agema added, if the person doesn't speak English the cop would probably check too. Agema also wants employers and temp agencies to use E-verify, a federal database that can check the validity of an employee's social security number.
These anti-immigrant bills are merely the latest in a flurry of misguided Agema legislation that scapegoats Michigan's most vulnerable rather than dealing with the state's true concerns.
Policitians like Agema have used questionable facts and falsehoods to demonize immigrants for too long. Let's tell Rep. Dave Agema that Michigan doesn't need his anti-immigrant laws!
Michigan Doesn't Need Your Anti-Immigrant Bills
Rep. Dave Agema,
I was very disappointed to hear that you hope to turn Michigan into the next Arizona.
Michigan is in serious economic trouble that demands real solutions, not scapegoating. Our state is no place for the nativist antics or the controversy we saw this year in Arizona. Your proposed bill will do nothing to improve the safety, economy or fiscal solvency of the state or its citizens. Instead, it will create a divisive debate that will only distract from the real economic and social issues facing Michigan residents.
I am sure you are aware that in 2005, Rep. James Sensenbrenner sponsored H.R. 4437, an equally discriminatory, unconstitutional bill that wasted taxpayers' and legislators' time. Like Sensenbrenner's bill, major portions of the Arizona bill were also shot down. And since it passed SB 1070, the state of Arizona has spent over $1 million on legal defense and has paid out hundreds of thousands more to public relations firms to restore the state’s image.
Save Michigan the embarrassment and the cost, and drop your plans to needlessly criminalize the state's immigrants.
