Tell Ohio Lawmakers: Vote against anti-gay, anti-labor bill

The Issue

Marriage is legally defined as a union between a man and a woman in Ohio. Effectively, Ohio already has a ban on gay marriages on the books. Yet despite that, anti-gay marriage language has wormed its way into an anti-labor bill that is currently making headlines.

The bill in question is S.B. 5, a bill that would effectively take collective bargaining rights away from most of the state's public employee unions. According to Governor John Kasich (R-OH), the bill could save Ohio over a billion dollars. Things get even more dicey, with a provision in the labor bill that blasts same-sex relationships. Check out this excerpt from Think Progress's website:

Sec. 3101.01 of S.B. 5: … A marriage may only be entered into by one man and one woman. Any marriage between persons of the same sex is against the strong public policy of this state. Any marriage between persons of the same sex shall have no legal force or effect in this state and, if attempted to be entered into in this state, is void ab initio and shall not be recognized by this state. The recognition or extension by the state of the specific statutory benefits of a legal marriage to non-marital relationships between persons of the same sex or different sexes is against the strong public policy of this state. Any public act, record or judicial proceeding of this state, as defined in section 9.82 of the Revised Code, that extends the specific statutory benefits of legal marriage to non-marital relationships between persons of the same sex or different sexes is void.

Again, the state of Ohio has already banned gay marriage, which makes the inclusion of this section even more offensive. It also opens up the floor to block civil union recognitions, should that become an issue in the near future. The bill was passed by a single Senate vote. Now it goes to the House.
