NBC recently reported on the increased mosquito population created by global warming. Earlier this year, a study found that heartworm, a fatal disease transmitted to dogs and cats by mosquitos, is on the rise in the U.S. An unlikely coincidence...

The fate of domestic animals is tied very closely to the fate of humanity. Human concerns about food safety, water, disease, and other impacts of climate change affect the animals that live with us, too. You drink from the same tap, depend on the same agricultural system for your dinner, and rely on the same energy sources to keep your electricity and heat on.

Like two-thirds of American households, President Obama considers his dog a member of the family. Bo Obama, and the millions of other dogs and cats across the country, need meaningful climate policy passed now as much as we do. Send the President an email reminding him that there's yet another constituency -- one that he shares the White House with -- that's in trouble due climate change.

Bo Needs Strong Action Against Climate Change

Dear President Obama,

Like you, the majority of American households have pets that they consider part of the family. Now dogs and cats are facing an unprecedented threat, one they share with humans and wildlife: climate change.

The resources we depend on that are threatened by global warming -- clean air, safe water, and food -- are the same things our companion animals need to survive. Rising temperatures also bring increased disease risk to our animals. For example, recent reports show that heartworm, a deadly disease transmitted by mosquitos who thrive in warmer temperatures, is on the rise.

As someone who cares about animals, I urge you to pass meaningful climate change policies that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in clean energy and energy efficiency.

We've reached a critical point in the climate crisis, and now is the time to act for human health, for wildlife, and for Bo and all the family pets like him across the country.
