Senator David Mark: Thank you for the passage of the 10 year old Freedom of Information Bill
The Issue
We are wondering why a bill that was initiated since the beginning of the Fourth Republic under the first Civilian administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, between 1999 and 2003 has not seen the light of the day. At this era of the “Re-brand Nigeria Campaign”, which is aimed at national re-orientation and rebirth; the FOIB bill should be the first bill to be passed by the National Assembly.
If the National Assembly as an institution supports the zero corruption program of the Federal Government, it should not continue to delay the proceedings that would lead to the successful passage of the bill. Nigerians and in fact the civil society are surprised that the current National Assembly made up of eminent and resourceful law makers do not see any reason for the passage of such a bill that will ensure transparency and accountability in the running of Government businesses at all levels across the country.
This administration is almost gone and we are here still talking about the FOIB. It is undemocratic and makes a caricature of what this administration led by President Goodluck Jonathan is preaching.
We hereby demand an urgent passage of the FOIB without further delay! Now is the best time to act.
God bless Nigeria!
Nigeria… Good people! Great Nation!!
