Why This Is Important

Recently, Kraft Foods announced the purchase of Cadbury, the UK-based candy company which has long been a leader in the world of corporate social responsibility (CSR), especially in buying Fair Trade cocoa and working to reduce exploitation in its supply chains. While Kraft has stated publicly that it plans to honor the Fair Trade commitments made by Cadbury (as well as Green and Black’s which is also owned by Cadbury), you can make a difference by reminding Kraft that responsible cocoa sourcing is important to consumers and good for business!

Adopting Cadbury's Ethical Commiments Will Help Kraft Succeed

Greetings Ms. Rosenfeld,

As a consumer of both Kraft and Cadbury products, I have been following Kraft's recent successful acquisition of the Cadbury company for some time now. I support Cadbury's extensive record on developing proactive and substantive corporate social responsibility guidelines for suppliers. Cadbury has defined itself as an "ethics-led" company, and preserving those ethics is important to consumers like me. I am happy to see the recent statements in the press that Kraft intends to honor Cadbury and Green and Black’s Fair Trade commitments.

To keep Cadbury's loyal customer base and expand the consumers of Kraft and Cadbury products, I agree that it is important to honor and expand Cadbury's social responsibility policies throughout the newly merged company. This is the perfect moment to embrace policies that will help you do good in the world and do better as a business. As you continue discussions with Cadbury about the path moving forward, I hope that you will:

- continue to expand the purchase of Fair Trade certified cocoa over the next decade and increase the availability of consumer products made with Fair Trade certified cocoa;
- commit to continuing and expanding Cadbury and Green and Black’s commitment to making Fair Trade certified chocolate bars and other products widely available – especially in the US market;
- adopt Cadbury's Human Rights and Ethical Trading (HRET) policy;
- and replicate and continue Cadbury's Purple Goes Green initiative.

Demonstrating a commitment to corporate social responsibility will make consumers like me excited to buy products from Kraft, including Cadbury and Green and Black’s products.

Regards,
