Iowa is overflowing with Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). The state's factory farms cause massive environmental destruction, spewing waste and chemical run-off into local waterways. More than 400 of Iowa's streams, rivers, and lakes are polluted, largely because of CAFOs.
Not only are CAFOs environmentally degrading, but they decrease the quality of life for communities living near them. Residents living near CAFOs endure foul odors, flies, pollution, and decreased property values. Plus, keeping animals locked up indoors is cruel and inhumane.
Democrat Francis Thicke and Republican Bill Northey are running for the position of Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture. Tell both candidates to take measures to clean up the state's CAFOs.
Clean Up Iowa's CAFOs
Greetings,
CAFOs in Iowa are causing environmental, animal welfare, and social problems. Run-off from factory farms has contributed to the pollution of more than 400 of the state's waterways. Local communities have no say in where these CAFOs get sited, and residents living near them must endure foul odors, flies, pollution, and decreased property values. Plus, keeping animals locked indoors for their whole lives is cruel and inhumane. We ask that you do the following:
-Implement more stringent waste removal and storage regulations for CAFOs
-Give local county governments some say in where CAFOs get sited
-Integrate confined livestock into the landscape
By implementing these strategies, you can ensure that Iowa's agricultural sector becomes more environmentally sustainable.
