Tell Indiana House to Stop the Discriminatory Gay Marriage Ban Amendment Proposal

The Issue

Indiana's GOP led House will consider a proposal for a constitutional amendment that would strengthen and secure an existing discriminatory state law banning gay marriage.

In 2005, an amendment passed the General Assembly when Republicans controlled both the House and the Senate. Then in 2006, when Democrats won House control, the proposal languished even though it had some Democratic support. This year the Republicans have regained control of both House and Senate and are pushing to get the proposal up for a vote in both branches of the legislature. If it passes, it could be placed on the ballot in Indiana in 2014.

Both Democratic and Republican legislators in Indiana support this proposed discriminatory amendment as well as the current state law that bans gay marriage. It has support from traditional family value groups in the state that wish to preserve marriage solely for heterosexual couples.  Micah Clark, a director at the American Family Association of Indiana and supporter of the proposed amendment, openly discriminates in an Associated Press article when refering to the proposal. He describes homosexuals as a minority group that should not be given the right to redefine marriage for Indiana.

This resolution would ban both gay marriage and civil unions and end all hope for any legal recognition for these committed couples. All people have the right to marriage, even in Indiana. Tell the Indiana House to put an end once and for all to discrimination and the gay marriage ban amendment.
