Racial profiling is the accepted term for what many know as being stopped for "Driving while black". It is the practice by law enforcement of stopping people solely based on their race or ethnicity. Currently, only about half of the states have any legislation outlawing the practice--very few of which are located in the Southeast. However, Georgia may be on their way to joining Florida as the only states in this region to completely address the issue.
Contact Georgia state legislators today and tell them you want to see their state lead the way in establishing standards for the elimination of racial profiling in the southeast. Tell them you support the collection of demographic data and no longer want to see cases of "driving while black" in the news. By signing your name to the petition below you are taking a stand against racial profiling and the use of race as a basis for traffic stops.

Pass HB1009/SB325 and End Racial Profiling
Greetings,
I am writing in regards to legislation that I believe needs to be passed. In HB1009/SB325 you, as a Georgia lawmaker, have the opportunity to take a stand against racial profiling. About half of the states in our country currently outlaw the practice of law enforcement using race and ethnicity as a sole reason for making a stop. Good police practice and ethical enforcement of the law mandates that the people are equally protected. Without such legislation in place Georgia has become a place where claims of such discrimination are commonplace.
In addition to eliminating profiling and almost as importantly, HB1009/SB325 will mandate the collection of demographic data at all stops. This means that officials will be better able to track who is being stopped, cited, or arrested and why. Currently, the only information Georgia is able to collect on the presence or absence of racial profiling is witness testimony. This collection of data is a simple move that will result in a great amount of useful information on the subject of law enforcement and race.
Please take a moment and read over the bill. I ask that you vote in favor of this law that will bring Georgia up to speed with the rest of the nation in regards to race and equality under the law.
