Why This Is Important

In the past politicians made strong commitments to restore biodiversity and water quality, but they have not honoured these commitments. Sign this petition to tell the EU to step-up their efforts!

With all the focus on the economic crisis, many politicians risk forgetting about the much bigger ecological crisis we face.

On July 11th at 3pm, hundreds of thousands of people will be jumping into rivers and lakes all across Europe as part of the Big Jump.  This will be used as a springboard to urge Europe's politicians to honour past promises and step up their efforts to protect our biodiversity.

Sign this petition to help the European Rivers Network and European Environmental Bureau to tell politicians that it's time to take action.

Want to join the hundreds of thousands or Europeans Jumping this July 11th at 3pm? Visit the Big Jump website and follow it on Facebook.

Step up efforts to protect biodiversity

Dear EU,

Biodiversity is essential for all life on earth: it sustains the health, wealth, food and fuel on which society and economy depends. Yet we only contribute 0.1% of our yearly budget to its protection. That is 12 EUR per citizen per year.

Our rivers, lakes and wetlands and their inhabitants, for example, are under ever increasing pressure due to pollution, over-abstraction and intensification of landuse. Although Europe has made some important progress in cleaning up its rivers in the last decades much more still needs to be done.

Therefore, we demand that EU and Member States politicians honour past commitments and step up their efforts to protect our biodiversity. It is time to adopt an ultimate rescue plan for nature and water:

- Revise and strengthen the river basin management plans that should be published this year and restore our rivers and lakes to health by 2015.

- Invest sufficient financial resources and take the necessary measures to meet the EU’s new biodiversity target for 2020.

- Provide for a strong European commitment in a new global strategic plan for biodiversity to reduce its impact on biodiversity loss worldwide

We hope you will commit to meet these goals in the shortest time possible
