Tell Denmark: Don't Support Greenland's Commercial Whaling
At the 2009 meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), a proposal was introduced that would allow Greenland, a protectorate of Denmark, to kill humpback whales. Though they claim that the hunt would supply Greenland's subsistence communities, there is clear evidence showing that much of the meat from past subsistence hunts has been sold commercially in supermarkets. The decision on whether or not to allow this hunt has been postponed for consideration by a smaller group of IWC member countries, most likely behind closed doors.
Humpback whales have not been hunted industrially since the mid-1960s. In the past, their populations dwindled by an estimated 90 percent before killing them was finally banned. Allowing them to be killed again could open up the door to extinction for their populations.
TAKE ACTION
Greenland should not be allowed to get away with killing humpbacks, and we must make sure that this proposal is opposed by the IWC. Please contact the Queen of Denmark, Queen Margrethe II, and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and tell them to withhold their support for whaling in Greenland!

Dear [Decision Maker]:
At the meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), a proposal was introduced that would allow Greenland to kill humpback whales. I strongly urge you to do everything in your power to see that this does not happen.
Though the proposal claims that the humpback hunt would supply for Greenland's subsistence communities, evidence has been published that shows that much of the whale meat from these types of hunts is actually sold commercially in supermarkets.
In the past, humpback whale populations dwindled by an estimated 90 percent before killing them commercially was finally banned. Allowing the hunting of humpbacks by Greenlanders poses serious threats to the future of these whales.
Please take the whales into consideration as the IWC analyzes this proposal and withhold your support for whaling.
