Why This Is Important

National Vaccine Information Center's ad running on Delta flights is discouraging people from receiving the flu vaccine by downplaying the seriousness of the flu and instructing individuals to visit their "vaccine information" website.

An ad by the NVIC earlier this year which pointed Times Square visitors to their website was condemned by the American Academy of Pediatrics as being harmful, unfounded, unscientific and misleading.

The NVIC is a notorious anti-vaccine organization, whose name and website are designed to give the impression that they are a legitimate government agency. However their "vaccine information" is designed to frighten the public and encourage individuals to opt out of protecting themselves and their children through immunization.

According to the CDC, each year the flu kills up to as many as 49,000 people in the US and the WHO estimates up to 500,000 people globally with up to 5 million severe cases.

While washing hands and covering faces while coughing and sneezing help to prevent the spread of infection, vaccines play an important role in disease prevention — a role that cannot be ignored.

Putting travelers onto an airplane, where they are put in close proximity, if not direct contact, with other travelers for extended periods of time while discouraging them to do everything possible to protect themselves and each other is simply irresponsible at best, and downright dangerous at worst.
