Earlier this year, Equality Delaware announced that they were working with Delaware lawmakers to introduce civil unions legislation in the state -- a move that would allow Delaware to join states like Illinois and Hawaii in recognizing many civil rights for same-sex couples. The goal of the legislation is to afford same-sex couples many of the civil rights that heterosexual, married couples receive in the state -- including inheritance rights, the ability to share insurance benefits, the ability for same-sex couples to raise a family together, and more.

Now this civil unions legislation is getting set for consideration in Delaware's state legislature, with potential for a vote very soon. A number of state lawmakers have signed on to co-sponsor the measure, and there seems to be healthy momentum to get civil unions legislation done in Delaware. Add your voice to these efforts, and let's make Delaware the next state to advance equality for same-sex couples.

It's time for Delaware to pass civil unions legislation

Greetings,

I'm writing today to ask you to support legislation in Delaware that would recognize civil unions for same-sex couples. This is important legislation that not only advances a measure of equal rights for same-sex couples in Delaware, but also honors the faith traditions of all Delaware residents. A few facts about this bill:

- This bill is not marriage legislation, but will allow same-sex couples to access many basic legal rights that should be afforded to all couples in Delaware, including things like insurance benefits, inheritance rights, and more;

- This bill also removes from Delaware law a harsh statute that actually fines and/or imprisons same-sex couples who declare that they are husbands and/or wives; and

-- This bill also allows for religious freedom, and will not require clergy members opposed to civil unions to have to perform them;

This year alone, states like Illinois and Hawaii have moved forward with civil unions legislation, recognizing that without civil unions laws, inequality exists in the rights afforded to same-sex couples. I urge you to join these states in recognizing civil rights for same-sex couples. Delaware should be known as a state that values all of its residents, and wants to see all of its residents treated with dignity regardless of who they love.

Thank you for your time.
