Tell CT Lawmakers & Gov. Dannel Malloy to Change the Law to Keep Effective Teachers in the Classroom

The Issue

Children need adults to make sound decisions regarding their educational well-being. It may not "feel good" at times but it’s the responsible thing to do.

During these tough economic times, school districts in Connecticut and across the country are facing tough decisions when determining what programs to keep in the schools and which staff lay-offs will occur.

We also know that a vast majority of tax-payers are feeling the severe impact of this economic and education crisis! This will include the impact of potential lay-off of teachers as a measure to close budget gaps due to frozen state and local funding 2008 levels.

Because of contract clauses enacted years ago, well before the fiscal crisis, teachers were laid off based on seniority; how long one was on the job. Example: a fifteen year teacher can "bump" a 10 year teacher regardless of effectiveness in the classroom, teacher training or degree of study.

Yet, research clearly states that this type of decision making cannot ensure an effective teacher is in the classroom meeting the needs of children, a more comprehensive evaluative approach is needed.

The 2011 Connecticut legislative session ends June 8, 2011 so please tell CT lawmakers and Governor Dannel Malloy to change the current law to ensure effective teachers are attracted and retained in the classroom.

Please see the Hartford Courant op-ed entitled " Teacher Seniority Should not Trump Quality" citing the petition of Executive Director Robert Radar of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) and the Executive Director Joe Cirasuolo of the Connecticut Association of Public Schools Superintendent(CAPSS) petition to CT lawmakers and the Governor Dannel Malloy
